ACSA Timber inthe City Competition - Velvet Underground
THE VELVET UNDERGROUND: LIVING LIGHT IN NEW YORK CITY The ACSA design competition, Timber in the City, asked to design a more area-conscious, mixed use complex in the Essex Market area in the Lower East side of Manhattan. The area is busy with people, but lacking in places for those people to congregate in. Our team’s design proposes integrating an extended market, Andy Warhol museum and apartments in the public space. The band The Velvet Underground, managed by Andy Warhol, was the inspiration because their music was unheard of at the time and went against the grain. How people moved through the area composed the curved forms of the buildings. The massive program was distributed into smaller buildings. The buildings backed off from Delancey Street to make a big public entry while the main activity space was moved to the underground. The street level acts as a bridging system that visually allows people to see The Velvet Underground. Moving upward, the buildings become residential towers that showcase the Warhol colors. Each tower is capped with a public roof top space.
